In this post, we’ll briefly explore everything you need to know about cufflinks, including the different types, when and how to wear them, and why they’re a must-have for any dapper man’s wardrobe.

This post is meant as introductory article to the wonderful world of cufflinks, which we will explore in more detail in future posts. Let’s start…

why cufflinks are a must have for men

Types of Cufflinks

Before we dive into the details of how to wear cufflinks, let’s first take a look at the different types available.

  1. Bullet Back Cufflinks: This is the most common type of cufflink, featuring a small cylinder with a bullet-shaped backing. These are easy to use and can be found in a variety of designs. I would say about 70% of all easily found cufflinks are bullet back cufflinks, they’re that common.

  2. Whale Back Cufflinks: Similar to bullet back cufflinks, but with a larger, curved backing that resembles a whale’s tail. These can be a bit more difficult to use but offer a sleek, modern look.

  3. Chain Link Cufflinks: These cufflinks feature two decorative pieces linked together by a chain. They offer a more traditional and elegant look, and are often favored for formal occasions. Not the easiest find, but if you happen to come across a pair of chain link cufflinks my recommendation would be to just grab it immediately!

  4. Toggle Cufflinks: These feature a small bar that slides through the cuff hole, with a toggle on the other end to keep them in place. They offer a unique, contemporary look and are popular for casual occasions.

These are just a few of the different cufflinks mechanisms you can find, but this is by no means an exhaustive list.

You will find there are several (and very original) types of cufflinks, but in principle they serve the same function and the majority are very easy to use.

When to Wear Cufflinks

Cufflinks can be worn for both formal and casual occasions, but it’s important to choose the right type for the event.

For formal events such as weddings or black-tie affairs, opt for classic cufflinks such as chain link or whale back.

These will complement your tuxedo or formal suit, adding an extra touch of elegance to your look.

For business or professional settings, stick to simple and understated designs such as bullet back or toggle cufflinks.

These will add a touch of personality to your outfit without being too flashy or distracting.

For casual events, feel free to experiment with more unique and playful designs, such as novelty cufflinks or colorful enamel cufflinks.

These can be a great way to add a pop of personality to your outfit and show off your personal style.

Ultimately, cufflinks can take an elegant outfit to a new level or keep a casual outfit fun and not-too-serious.

It is all in your personal approach and what you’re trying to accomplish with your overall look.

Now let’s talk about the how.

How to Wear Cufflinks

Once you’ve chosen the right type of cufflinks for your occasion, it’s important to know how to wear them correctly.

  1. Start with a shirt that has French cuffs: Cufflinks are meant to be worn with French cuff shirts, which feature double cuffs that are folded back and fastened with cufflinks. There are other cuff variations that also allow for cufflinks, like the so-called convertible cuffs, but for simplicity’s sake we’ll keep it short and sweet: wear French cuffs shirts.

  2. Insert the cufflink: Simply insert the cufflink through the holes in the shirt cuff, ensuring that the design is facing outward. This may sound obvious, but you never know 😉

  3. Fasten the cufflink: Depending on the type of cufflink and mechanism, this may involve twisting, sliding, or toggling the mechanism to secure it in place. And make sure it is properly in place, you don’t want to lose or break a cufflink.

  4. Adjust… and admire: Once your cufflinks are in place, adjust them to ensure they’re level and facing the right direction. Now admire and let others admire your sophisticated and dapper look!

Okay, now that you have the most basic knowledge of cufflinks, let’s talk about why I believe that cufflinks are a must-have for men.

Why Cufflinks are a Must-Have

Cufflinks are a mighty accessory despite their small size, that can elevate any suit and tie outfit.

Here are just a few reasons why they’re a must-have for any dapper man’s wardrobe:

  1. They add a touch of personality. Cufflinks come in a wide range of designs and styles, from classic and understated to bold and playful. Choosing the right pair can show off your personal style and add a touch of classic or fun personality to your outfit.
  2. Cufflinks are versatile accessories that can be worn for a variety of occasions. From formal events such as weddings and black-tie dinners to business meetings and even casual outings, cufflinks can be appropriate for any occasion. It all comes down to choosing the right style and design to complement your style, outfit and the occasion.
  3. Cufflinks are not just for men’s formal wear. While they may be most commonly associated with suits and dress shirts, cufflinks can also be worn with more casual outfits such as blazers and even denim jackets. This versatility means you can incorporate cufflinks into your wardrobe and style them in a way that suits your personal taste.
  4. Cufflinks can make for great conversation starters. Whether it’s a unique design or a nod to a particular interest or hobby, cufflinks can spark interesting conversations and connections with others. They can also be a great way to show off your personality and break the ice in social situations. Perhaps more so than neckties, I have found cufflinks to be the one accessory that does spark interesting conversations.
